Tennessee Dental Insurance and Vision Insurance Plans
Tennessee Dental and Vision insurance plans are used to cover the costs of dental and eye services, including cleanings, fillings, and other dental exams, and eye exams, glasses and contacts. There are many types, including dental discount plans, vision discount plans, all the way up to full insurance which covers large portions of charges.
Tennessee Dental Plans
Dental insurance is a useful product, covering most costs of preventive care for teeth, and addition coverage that is there when you need a bit more care, such as a filling or crown. The main difference in the plans are in the amount covered for services and way they determine how much they will pay, and the type of network. Dental insurance plans come in one of two different types, PPO or indemnity.
Indemnity Dental Plans
An Indemnity dental insurance plan can be used at any dentist regardless of network affiliation. Usually the dentist office will file the claim against your dental insurance, however in some rare cases you might have to pay up front then submit the claim back to the dental insurance company yourself. This type of insurance is the most convenient, because it can be used at any dentists office without having to match it up with a specific network.
PPO Dental Plans
A PPO dental insurance is one that has a preferred provider network that they utilize to negotiate pricing. Typically you will need to see a dentist that is in network, or you will have to pay higher copayment amounts. This type of insurance is generally less expensive than an Indemity coverage because the carriers are negotiating with the Dental offices in order to reduce the amount they are paying for services to be performed.
Dental Waiting periods
Typically dental insurance companies deal with pre-existing conditions in one of three ways. They either require a contract, have a waiting period before certain services are covered, or cover a lower amount for a certain time before full benefits kick in. This is to prevent people from driving up the cost of the insurance for everyone by purchasing coverage right before they need a very expensive procedure performed, then cancelling it right away in order to save themselves the premiums of owning the insurance plan.
Tennessee Vision Insurance
Vision insurance typically covers eye exam every year, and a certain amount toward glasses or contacts. Injuries to your eyes are typically already covered by medical insurance, vision coverage is specifically for people who have trouble seeing, not to provide coverage for injuries. The plans vary a lot in the amounts covered, where they can be used, and how much they provide in benefits, so it is important to review the plans carefully.
Vision and Dental Discount Plans
There is another class of plans that are known as discount plans. They are not insurance, but rather are similar to membership in a discount club that gives you a certain specific discount at retailers that participate in the discount program. This can include discounts on dental treatments, eye checks, glasses and contacts, or even car rentals and hotel rooms. These type of plans are sometimes incorrectly marketed as insurance, which they are not, but that does not mean they do not provide value. They are an option worth considering, especially for people on a limited budget.
